We are given provided rights as a child of God & as a joint heir with Christ. We do need to learn our position & our rights & then exercise our legal rights in the Kingdom of God. This we do with the Holy Spirit and in our prayer life and walk in the faith.

Do I have the power and authority to command, decree, or declare?

 

​

For simplicity, I will refer to command, decree, and declare, as decree. There are three primary ways of decreeing. Many will say, “I decree …”, others will say, “I decree … in the name of Jesus, and a few decree exactly what the Holy Spirit tells or shows them.

 

I decree in my power ... 

If I say “I decree that you are healed” without any guidance of the Holy Spirit, I would in effect be saying, “I decree that you are healed in the name of Steve (my name)”. But who is Steve, what authority or power does he have to heal? He has absolutely no power. On my own, in the same of Steve, I can do nothing. In John 15:5, Jesus says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”  When I decree in my power and authority, am I glorifying God? So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). The Lord says, “I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give my glory to another” (Isaiah 42:8). Rather than decree in my name or saying “I”,  I need to direct the glory to God. I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore (Psalm 86:12).

I decree in the Name of Jesus Christ ...

We can only exert power and authority through prayer, when we make a decree in the name of Jesus. We are giving our decree to God to do whatever He will through the name, power, and authority of Jesus. When “I decree … in the name of Jesus”, I am actually praying and putting my command or decree in God’s hands. In effect, I am replacing the “I” with Jesus. Through the name of Jesus we have a door, a power of attorney, to approach God and give Him our request as His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20).

In the same manner, it would be foolish to come against Satan in my own power by saying “Satan, I bind you”. Rather, as Jesus instructed, we come against Satan in His Name, saying “Satan, In the name of Jesus, I bind you”.  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils (Mark 16:17). Satan is not obligated to listen to me, but he must respond when I come in the name of Jesus Christ, standing in Jesus’ power and authority.

You cannot even approach God except through Jesus. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

​

Clearly, we enter into the power of God only through Jesus Christ. No where do we find the early church or any of the disciples ever making any commands, decrees or declaration in their own power, but in prayer, in God’s power, and through Jesus Christ, as all prayer must be through Jesus in the power, authority, and glory of His name.

I decree per the instruction of the Holy Spirit ...

The third type of decree is when we are following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then we can be assured that what we decree is pleasing to God and is likely to be answered shortly.

​

 

Ask first ...

In most cases, we should first ask God for direction and guidance in how we should pray. Then we should pray and decree in the same of Jesus, the source of all power and authority.

​

Even Jesus, operating as man, never commanded, decreed or declared on His own, but only at the direction of God the Father through the Holy Spirit.

​

For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken (John 12:49).

​

Yes, you can command, decree and declare through Jesus, in His name, but the best way is always as Jesus did, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in what to do and what to say.

​

Following instructions of the Holy Spirit often result in a miracle that occur quickly while answers to prayers often take longer and may include medical help, better care for our body, and God’s touch. However, slow or fast, a miracle is any event that is not explainable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of God.

​

His will ...

In prayer to the Father, we need to recognize that God is greater than we are and knows what is best for us (Romans 11:33-34). In prayer, we should be saying, “not my will, but your will be done”.  The key to answered pray is not seeking our will but seeking to align our will with God’s will.

​

​

When to decree ...

When should we decree?  We can decree in most situations, but we are told to decree in two specific situations. 

 

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils (Matthew 10:8). We are told to decree healing first in Jesus’s name, then if they are not healed, to ask God for healing. 

 

Second, we are given the authority and responsibility to declare that Satan is bound in our life and those in our family and friends, that he may not manifest and that he must go. 

​

Jesus said, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you (Luke 10:19). 

​

As Jesus has given us the authority, it is our responsibility to come against Satan’s attacks. In Jesus name, we can tell the Devil, “Stop and get out of here! But why wait for Satan to first attack you or your loved one? Rather, attack Satan first, binding him with the Word and the power of God.  Click to learn more about defeating Satan.

Job 22:28 says, Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee…

​

Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him (Mark 11:23). 

​

Some will use Mark 11:23 as proof that Jesus told us that we can claim anything we want and it will be done. That we have the power and authority and that God is bound by His Word and must provide our request. But they neglect verses 22 and 24. 

​

Verse 22 says And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God”. Our faith must be in God, not ourselves. Verse 24 says Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Jesus is saying, we are to speak to our problem in prayer, in the name of Jesus, and if we believe and it is within God’s will, we will receive in God’s perfect timing.

​

 

Summary ...

Yes, we can command, decree, and declare, but only through and in the name and power of Jesus Christ. When we decree in the name of Jesus, we are submitting our decree as a prayer to His power, authority, and glory. The only alternative is following the instructions of the Holy Spirit.  

 

And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father (Colossians 3:17).
